I don’t really fit any of the categories, perhaps because I live in
Israel? I did intermarry, but my husband converted halakhically. In the U.S. I suppose you could have called us ‘engaged,’ but that wouldn’t have been right either. I suppose the part I most agree with is that all streams of Judaism in the U.S. could and should make a greater effort to be inclusive. For instance, we would have been members of a congregation had there been one that made us truly welcome. Btw we lived in Massachusetts but outside the Boston area.
Yes, this was a study of American Jews, and while we are all family, each branch of the mishpachah has its own quirks.
Inclusiveness is critical to a Jewish future, in my opinion. Looking back in history, when we have indulged in sinat chinam, baseless hatred, it’s always hurt us. It is a shame that we cannot, as a people, seem to learn not to exclude one another.
