Today I’m going to turn the tables a bit, and ask you a question.
I’m thinking about offering an online real-time Torah study group. Details, as they stand in my mind right now:
- Weekly session
- Venue: Google Hangouts or Adobe Connect, still pondering that one.
- Topic: Weekly Torah Portion
- Duration: 1 hour
- Level: Basic, no Hebrew required.
- Cost: Suggested donation per session, via PayPal, but no requirement.
- Starting date: With Parashat Bereshit, week beginning October 11.
Time is the tricky bit, since I am aware of readers in many different time zones. Also, other than a couple of Twitter followers who suggested this scheme, I have no idea whether anyone would actually be interested.
So here’s what I need from you, if you are interested:
- Your time zone
- Days and times that would work for you
- Any comments or suggestions you have on the above.
- Is there any other subject you’d like to study?
Please reply via Comments – I can get your email or your blog from that (never fear, your email will NOT show to the public and I will never let anyone else have it without your permission.) I will contact you privately after a few days if it looks like this might actually work. Obviously, if you aren’t interested, no need to comment.
Curious to see how this goes.
I would be very interested! My eldest son might also be. We’re in the UK, so after sevenish our time on a weekday, or afternoon our time on a Sunday would be great. Not sure about topic – I feel so very ignorant that anything would be good…
Possibly interested, if I can only reply to your posts!

Adding to my words, please explain the on=line hook-up. I am not too good at on=line activities.

How wonderful that you’re considering doing this! I was just thinking yesterday how great it would be to take a class with you. Hope it works out.

My time zone: United Kingdom (GMT)

I very much enjoyed studying Torah with you previously.
Time zone: Pacific Standard Time.
Days and times: Sunday is the best day and anytime as long as the class ends at 5 p.m. Weekdays best window 6 p.m. where the class ends at 8 p.m. but would look at other options.
Thank you for considering this again.

Dear Rabbi Ruth,
So here’s what I need from you, if you are interested:
Your time zone
GMT
Days and times that would work for you
Any day, 11am – 2pm…..but see below
Any comments or suggestions you have on the above.
I would love this…..but Im not good with live things: would a podcast (perhaps as an alternative or addition)be worth considering? (I do *not* want to sound as though Im being overly needy/demanding….just trying to explain 🙂 I find live communication very difficult -telephones, anything. Tried Skype once and took ages to calm down after it. I am only one person, here….and am not intending to try to get things to fit me : I do hope that’s not how this is coming across)
Just throwing some thoughts in….
– a weekly youtube video, with (eg) either a private Facebook group, or yahoo email group, to discuss, ask questions, etc.
Is there any other subject you’d like to study?
Jewish food. Pirkei Avos. Anti-Semitism.
Alex
Time zone: Central
Evenings are best for me any day of the week.
Your time zone: Pacific time
Days and times that would work for you: weekday evenings 7:00-10:00pm
Any comments or suggestions you have on the above: it would be wonderful to study with a cohort of beginners.
Oh my….a thought just zoomed into my head: if there were to be a group, “Coffee Shop Cohort” has a certain something to it…..ignore me, it’s silly, but I rather like it…. 🙂
Alex
Rabbi, a Torah study/weekly parasha study would be interesting.
I am in CDT zone.
anytime that works for the majority/you would suit me as I am retired.
word study that is relative to the parasha, starting with the word ‘parasha’ 🙂
Todah rabah!!
Meredith
Interesting idea, Rabbi.
Time Zone: Central
Financial support: Good idea, provided it is recommended and not mandatory
Level: Well, I’ll wait and see. Basic might be a bit too basic for me.
Great idea!
My time zone is generally Mountain (but I live in Arizona, so some months it is Pacific!)
I think this is a wonderful idea.
Weekdays between – 9AM & 7PM work best for me. Unfortunately weekends are out.
I’m open to any subject Rabbi you choose or the group as a whole would enjoy. Thank you for this opportunity.
Thank you, Sheila! I will get back to y’all soon on this.
Afternoon or evening–I’m pacific, as you know. I’d like some Hebrew thrown in to add to the context only.
ooohh I have just seen this … is it to late for me to join in? I am in the UK – in the middle…
Let me get back to you on this – I need to see how many we have and what the software will support.
Thank you xx
